Monument of Arab Street Trail

Title: Monument of Arab Street Trail

Arab street, a landmark that is well known of its cultures, art and also entertainment thus it had also captured a lot of tourist attentions. The street was first owned by an arab merchant, Syed Ali bin Mohammed Al Junied and it was the site of an arab kampong, hence its was named Arab street. Back then the Chinese prefer the street to be called the Javanese street, in mandarin its jiao a koi (is my spelling is correct?) Well, that because majority of the area were used to be inhabitants by the Javanese. In Arab street, items like Songkok (malay headwear/cap), spices, basketry items and textiles are commonly sold in there.

But the main attraction of the monument in Arab street was Sultan mosque. The name of the mosque itself was a testimony to Sultan Hussien Shah who signed the treaty with Sir Stamford Raffles. In 1824, Sultan Hussien Shah decided to build the mosque as a mark of his status, so he decided to construct the mosque next to his palace. Two years later, the original mosque that have two-tierred pyramidal roof which made the design typical, was replaced to a new one. Then in 1924, the year of the mosque's centenary had fallen into a state of disrepair, so the trustees from the muslim community approved a plan to erect a new mosque. In 1928, the mosque was completed with a Saracenic style, incorporating minarets and balustrades that was designed and adopted by Swan and Maclaren, an Architect Denis Sentry.

Now, Arab street had become a place for commercial, culture, art and also entertainment to most of the local people in Singapore, especially tourist that came by to the place for night life entertainment. Well, i hope in the future, Arab Street will remain like what it is now, if the place is changed/demolished i think we will lost one of our history monuments and it will be forgotten to the new generations..
