Design of Culture

Chinatown is one of Singapore’s well known cultural sites, which has been maintained until now. The décor of Chinatown is that of the old 1930s kind where we still have the traditional stone walls and Chinese style roofs. However the interesting thing about Singapore’s Chinatown is that, it is not only a strictly Chinese place! Chinatown has Chinese temples, Indian temples and even mosques. (Some Chinese and Indians believe in the same kind of Buddhism so they go to the same temple) Chinatown in mandarin is called niu che shui (which means bull-cart water) and in Malay it is called Kreta Ayer (Cart water)

On the right, is Koon seng road, lined up filled with colonial shophouses now turned into private houses, it is home to many different kinds of cultures. Some houses look distinctly peranakan or ornate eclectic Chinese styles. Just walking around the area to absorb the colourful homes and designs is a refreshing thing to do during the weekend. To see how the owners design their homes to suit their tastes, sometimes you can find some very inspirational decorations and layouts. This is one of the places where Singapore feels artsy and not just a bunch of stuff put together in the most practical way to save space and money in our somewhat apathetic and passionless society.
