The Disappearing Future

Having friends who say that they are going overseas and skipping Chinese New Year makes me think about what will happen to Chinatown in the future. Chinatown is a place where most Chinese people in Singapore gather to celebrate and countdown during New Year's Eve. With more and more people skipping Chinese New Year, this would in turn lead to the closure of shops selling New Year Goods and food.

Yes it is still as lively now and there are still people going there for countdown, but what will happen to it 10 years later? Or maybe even in 5 years? With more people skipping this tradition, they will slowly forget about this day,  where families gather for their reunion. This forgotten town might even fall prey to other big shot companies looking for a location to build their tall skyscrapers. Chinatown is not only a place where people for the New Year, it is also a hub of all Chinese festival, be it the dumpling festival, lantern festival etc. it is always the place where it will be lit during these festivals.
